We probably owe more to the Dynasty Warriors series than they get credit for. Seriously, these games never seems to get the spotlight but they set the standard for hack and slash games. They defined the horde of enemies style and were a lot of fun to boot. But I'm getting ahead of myself
RWBY is (probably) the second most well known Rooster Teeth series. An anime styled show made in Poser of all things. The series is know for its large diverse cast and over the top fights.
RWBY Grimm Elcipse then is a hack and slash where you and up to 3 others fight and shoot your way through hordes of enemies while a basic plot gives it all context. The merging of these two styles of entertainment would be crazy if the Zelda series hadn't done it as well.
You go through the levels as one of four(eight if you have the dlc) characters. Each character has their own move set and variation of a skill tree. While they each have they're own style the attacks are light, heavy, combos, counter, ranged, and ultimate. The ranged and ultimate attacks vary the most but all are useful and this only encourages you to play with others.
The skill tree is simple but the character develop through it in big ways. Thought I'd give to it as some options only unlock through the completion of challenges and there's even a sort of prestige system.
As mentioned above you can get a game going with up to four players. This is really the way to go as the action can easily become too much for a single combatant. The game shines when a large arena has four player fighting and countering enemies off each other. The levels you play through follow a simple plot that being so short I won't spoil here. The story is far from the main attraction here though. For a tie in game the focus is on function rather than fashion.
There's a horde mode as well and while I don't have any complaints about it, nothing in it stands out to me either. As the story mode it's best attempted with friends rather than whoever the game matches you with.
There's only a few problems I have with the game but they boil down to one big thing. Pacing. Occasionally the game will introduce a new mechanic or ask you to face waves of enemies. This in itself is not bad but the excitation leaves something to be desired. For example In the first wave defense, 4 waves, the first wave is laughably easy, the second slightly harder, but the third is punishingly hard before becoming easier for the fourth. Difficulty spikes, enemies with an absurdly large amount of health and once used mechanics grind the pacing and flow of the the game to a dead stop.
The good:
-the different characters all play very differently
-the ranged combat mechanics fit nicely with the horde style
The bad:
-occasional difficulty spikes destroy the pacing.
-new gameplay mechanics are introduced and used once.
If your a fan of the show(like me) then your really going to enjoy Grimm Elcipse. The game translates the feeling of the shows' combat to the controller very well. Each character feels different and is fun to play. If your not a fan of the show though you won't be as sold. The hack and slash gameplay is solid, but only fans will appreciate the varied characters and setting.
